The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has the authority to exclude individuals and entities from federal healthcare programs on a number of grounds. Covered entities and business associates are responsible for not employing or contracting those that have been placed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) or be subject to fines and penalties.
APS employs a two-step approach to checking the LEIE to ensure that none of our relationships are at risk:
- As part of the credentialing process of new physicians to our service, when performing background screening checks on new employee candidates, and when working with new vendors.
- All NPIs, employees and vendors are systematically checked every month against the list to coincide with the OIG’s monthly update schedule. APS policy directs any matches to be definitively handled in an expedient manner and all supporting documentation to be retained according to current regulations.
