As the industry back-pedals to accommodate the delay in ICD-10-CM implementation, APS will continue to provide regular installments of our ICD-10 Update newsletter that illustrates the enhanced documentation needed to direct proper diagnosis code assignment and, hopefully, timely reimbursement of claims under the new version.
While ICD-9-CM codes are 3 to 5 digits in length, the codes under the ICD-10 system use 3 to 7 digits. The expanded number of characters of the ICD-10 code set identifies additional detail such as disease etiology, anatomic site, severity, episode of care, and laterality. As provider reports are the source of information for code assignment, the APS newsletters help to promote documentation improvements needed for final code selection from ICD-10-CM’s 68,000+ codes.
